Terrapin Turtle Studies Along Great Bay Boulevard
Terrapin Study on Great Bay Boulevard in Tuckerton, NJ
Northern diamondback terrapins along Great Bay Boulevard will be studied during the nesting season at the end of May/beginning of June through the end of July 2005 by Rutgers University Marine Field Station (Researcher - Stephanie Szerlag and JCNERR volunteers).
Terrapins will be monitored along Great Bay Boulevard and devices (road tubes) are set up along the road to measure traffic volume/speed. This will help us to determine the relationship between traffic and road mortality of the terrapins.
Live terrapins will also be measured and tagged when found on the road.
Results from 2004:
600 adult female terrapin occurrences were observed on Great Bay Boulevard during the nesting season.
53 individuals were victims of road mortality (8.83%)
A significantly greater percentage of females were killed before the first bridge in the section closest to town, despite fewer turtles using this area.
The majority of the road killed terrapins were discovered in the morning, suggesting that terrapins may be subjecting themselves to the high volume of early morning traffic and/or because of their nesting behavior.
This species is on the “Species of Special Concern” List for the state of New Jersey, with our help we can prevent this species from further decline and help it to thrive in our area.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Stephanie at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station at 609-296-5260 ext. 324. Thank you for your cooperation.
