What is required to rent a boat?

Boat rentals require basic knowledge of the New Jersey Rules and Regulations similar to driving a car as everything is linked to New Jersey Motor Vehicle. Being on the water does command a great deal of respect. You should be aware of the governing rules as they pertain to safety as well as extending courtesy to fellow boaters.

1. Do you need a drivers license?
Yes, as driving on the water is directly linked with New Jersey Motor Vehicle and you are required to abide by the laws and rules of the waterways. As of 2006, new laws require boating licenses depending on your birth date. - Top

2. How many people can fit on a boat?
The answer to this question depends on the total weight inside the boat. The boats are designed to go at a casual speed in the back bay areas. Weight distribution is very important. People must position themselves evenly throughout the boat and not put to much weight to any one side or end of the boat while in operation. The boat is the most stable in a level position. - Top

3. Do marinas supply the necessary equipment?
Livery or rental businesses are required to supply safety equipment on all vessels. The minimum requirement are life saving devices such as Life jackets (PFDs) or personal floatation devices as well as a throwable such as a seat cushion or life ring and a sounding device. Depending on the size of the vessel, additional equipment such as signaling devices and fire extinguishers may also be required. - Top

4. Do you offer lessons?
No, however the US Coast Guard Auxilary offers courses throughout the year. It is highly recommended that people take a boating safety course. This will give you a better feel of what is expected. Beyond that, perhaps go boating with a friend or someone you know who already is familiar with the waters you plan to navigate. Always ask local people the best places to go and things to look out for before attempting to go on your own. Boating is fun, but it is always best to go prepared. - Top

5. What is the "National Clean Boating Campaign"?
The National Clean Boating Campaign celebrates that "boating is good clean fun" and asks you to help keep it that way.
